  • Author: vicky
  • Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins

Ingredients

Scale

Base:

  • 50 Saltine crackers
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Topping:

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (e.g., pecans or walnuts) – optional
  • Sea salt or holiday sprinkles – optional for garnish

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2️⃣ Prepare the Baking Sheet:

  • Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Arrange the Saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire surface.

3️⃣ Make the Toffee Base:

  • In a medium saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring frequently.
  • Once the mixture begins to boil, let it boil undisturbed for 3 minutes until it reaches a deep caramel color.

4️⃣ Spread the Toffee:

  • Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the Saltine crackers, spreading evenly with a spatula to cover all the crackers.

5️⃣ Bake:

  • Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should be bubbling.

6️⃣ Add Chocolate:

  • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee.
  • Let the chocolate sit for a few minutes to soften, then use a spatula to spread it evenly.

7️⃣ Add Toppings:

  • While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle with chopped nuts, a pinch of sea salt, or holiday sprinkles for a festive touch.

8️⃣ Cool and Set:

  • Let the toffee cool at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  • Transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator for 1 hour to set completely.

9️⃣ Break Into Pieces:

  • Once set, break the toffee into bite-sized pieces and serve.
